What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is the study of human movement and the body mechanics behind that movement. A Kinesiologist is a health care practitioner who is well versed in the human body, health sciences and the application of various physical training methods to help with rehabilitation and improve overall health. They work to strengthen your body through active rehabilitation and other techniques to help reduce pain from old injuries and prevent new injuries from occurring while improving mobility. Exercise improves your entire body’s function and performance. Along with physical improvements, exercise causes your body to release endorphins in your brain, which are natural chemicals that can help relieve anxiety and depression. In general, Kinesiology helps you attain a deeper understanding and connection with your body in its entirety.

What to expect from our kinesiology treatments?

Initial Assessment

This is a head to to an assessment that can last from 1.5 to 2 hours. Your kinesiologist measures many things including, your range of motion, flexibility, strength, muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness. In addition, specific tests of any injured areas are done. A comprehensive report is written and can be sent to your referring doctor, ICBC case manager and lawyer (if required).

Treatment Plan

Based on the initial assessment, your Kinesiologist will formulate a treatment plan that is appropriate to your capabilities, fitness level, injuries and rehabilitation goals. We educate you on proper posture, soft tissue injuries, lifting techniques, nutrition and exercises. If you are not working, then a work conditioning program can be started. You will complete sessions anywhere from 1-4 hours per day, 5 times per week, for 4-6 weeks, depending on your assessment, current conditioning and demands of your job. If you are working, then sessions will be for 1 hour daily, 3 times per week. You will also use a home exercise program that considers your injuries, current physical capabilities, range of motion of uninjured and injured areas and rehabilitation goals. In addition, stability exercises are also given to improve core and extremity stability and strength.

Accident Rehabilitation & Fitness

Kinesiologists can be an integral part of helping you reach your fitness and rehabilitation goals. They can work with your doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists and other health practitioners to deliver comprehensive services for motor vehicle accident injuries and return to work programs.

Follow-up

Once you are on a gradual return to work schedule, follow ups can be for approximately 1 hour per day, 2 to 3 times per week until you return to work full time with follow ups on an “as needed” basis. We strive to get you to work full time if possible. Problem cases are directed back to the referring doctor for appropriate follow-up work or further referrals.
