ACTIVE REHAB

What is Active Rehab?

Active Rehabilitation addresses body movement, performance and function. Our specialists offer one-on-one sessions and show you active rehabilitation techniques such as exercise plans and stretches to help address your injuries. As your condition improves, your kinesiologist will change the active rehab therapies to address your needs. Our active rehabilitation specialists help educate you throughout the entire process so that you can continue your exercises independently.

How can active rehab help me?

  • Improve overall posture and body mechanics.
  • Reduce muscular imbalance via targeted strengthening.
  • Decrease whole body pain and discomfort, especially following a motor vehicle accident.
  • Manage chronic or new sports injuries.
  • Restore range of motion by addressing soft tissue injuries.
  • Increase stability, flexibility, and exercise tolerance through gentle physical conditioning.

What to expect from active rehab at Mountainview Health & Wellness?

Initial Assessment

This is a head to toe assessment that can last from 1.5 to 2 hours that measures many things such as your range of motion, flexibility, strength, muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness. In addition, specific tests of the injured areas are done. A comprehensive report is written and can be sent to the referring doctor, ICBC, and the patient’s lawyer if required.

Treatment Plan

Based on the initial assessment, a treatment plan is formulated that is appropriate to your capabilities, fitness level, injuries and rehabilitation goals. You are also educated on proper posture, pathology of soft tissue injuries, lifting techniques, nutrition, etc. If you are not working then a work conditioning program can be started where you will attend active rehab sessions anywhere from 1-4 hours per day, 5 times per week, for 4-6 weeks, depending on your assessment, current conditioning and the demands of your job. If you are working, then you can attend active rehab sessions for 1 hour daily, 3 times per week in addition to using a computer assisted home exercise program that considers your injuries, current physical capabilities, range of motion of uninjured and injured areas and rehabilitation goals. In addition, stability exercises are also given to improve core and extremity stability and strength.

Follow-up

Once you are on a gradual return to work schedule, you can attend followed up active rehabilitation sessions for approximately 1 hour daily, 2 to 3 times per week until they return to work full time with follow up on an “as needed” basis. We strive to get the patient back to work full time if possible. Problem cases are directed back to the referring doctor for appropriate follow-up work or further referrals.
